Launched in 2001, the " Association of River Trusts" (ART) is the representative body of the Rivers Trust movement in England and Wales and also provides an "umbrella" for many community based river improvement groups, initiatives and projects. ART has an MOU with its sister body in Scotland, "River and Fisheries Trust Scotland" (RAFTS)

The Rivers Trusts Movements are
  • A grassroots - "bottom up" movement
  • Involving people who are "doers" with "wet feet"
  • Recognised as river basin "delivers"
  • Raising awareness and providing education
  • Engaging people who own and manage the resources
        e.g. riparian owners, farmers, users
  • Empowering communities to take action
  • Allowing people to take local "ownership"
  • Identifying new funding sources and forming strategic partnership to be more effective
  • The East Yorkshire Chalk Rivers Trust and the Wild Trout Trust are working together
to improve and protect the brown trout and its habitats within East Yorkshire.

  • Rivers Trust movement
